" Rock To The River Festival" Imatra,
Unser Weg führte uns auch zum Hotel Imatran Valtionhotelli. Später erfuhren wir, dass Slade dort einquartiert waren.

Es war eine sehr angenehme Reise durch die finnische Landschaft, wobei wir in 4 größeren Städten einen Stop hatten. Unsere Tour verlief von Helsinki - Riihimäki - Lathi - Kouvola- Lappeenranta - Imatra.
Slade hatten wohl in etwa die selbe Strecke hinter sich gebracht, da sie am Freitag in Helsinki landeten und Samstag Vormittag ging es dann von Helsinki nach Dänemark.
Wir waren sehr zufrieden mit unserer Unterkunft, ein schönes Hotel, mit Pension, erinnerte daran, dass wir uns nur 7 km von der russischen Grenze entfernt befanden.
Plötzlich war die Überraschung groß. Hey! Da war Dave Hill !!!
Er kam über die Brücke geschlendert, die über den Wasserstaudamm und Wasserfall führte. Was fuer eine Freude. Natürlich riefen wir ihm begeistert zu und er kam auch zu uns auf die andere Seite der Strasse (und Brücke). Es war nicht zu weit vom Hotel entfernt - er wollte sicherlich zum Hotel, um nach dem Soundcheck noch etwas zu relaxen und sich umzuziehen.
Wir hatten einen kurzen aber sehr netten Talk mit Dave, er gab einige Autogramme auf Fotos die wir dabei hatten
Wir waren ganz aufgelöst und happy über diese nette Begegnung.
Die Bierzelte waren abgegrenzt, Getränke durften aus der Absperrung nicht mit herausgenommen werden. Es gab auch einen VIP Bereich, da hatten wir leider keinen Zutritt :-)
Selbstverständlich beobachteten wir ihn auf Schritt und Tritt und als er dann seitlich die Bühne verließ, griffen wir die Gelegenheit, um ihn zu rufen.
Welche Freude, bei dem Lärm hörte er uns dennoch, denn die Band hatte bereits begonnen zu spielen. Wir winkten ihm zu und gestikulierten, dass er bitte zu uns kommen solle, denn wir waren hinter der Absperrung.
Er zeigte uns sein Gesicht mit einem großen Fragezeichen: meint Ihr mich ???
Ja, ja, can you come please. Und dann kam er näher und näher und ein freundliches Lächeln zog über sein Gesicht.
Es war ein fantastisches Wiedersehen mit ihm, wir umarmten uns und tauschten paar Worte aus. Leider war es so laut, denn wir standen direkt vor den Lautsprechern.
Er winkte uns freundlich zu und lächelte. Dann sahen wir ihm die ganze Zeit beim Soundcheck zu und konnten ein paar schöne Foto`s von ihm schießen.
Später kam John Berry für einen sehr kurzen Check an der Gitarre auf die Bühne. Auch ihn begrüßten wir mit winken, doch er hatte beide Hände in den Hosentaschen und nahm so keine Notiz von uns :-(
Die Setlist ist bekannterweise etwas kürzer in Imatra.
Dave war in einer fantastischen Stimmung, er sprang über die Bühne mit soviel Elan und Leichtigkeit, es war großartig ihm zuzusehen. Er hatte ein ansteckendes Lächeln auf seinem Gesicht und zeigte sich dem Publikum in einer mitreißenden Art und Weise: alle waren begeistert und sangen mit, so laut es ging ! Natürlich animierte Dave das Publikum auch gehörig, dies zu tun.
Mal McNulty (unser erstes Konzert mit ihm), bot ebenfalls eine gute Show. Seine Stimme unterscheidet sich schon merklich von Steve`s. Er hat eine ganz andere Stimmlage, viel tiefer und kraftvoller, lauter.
Mit Noddy zwar nicht vergleichbar, aber es kommt ihm wesentlich näher.

Es war ein gelungener Abend, etwas kalt, aber so ist es nun mal bei Vollmond und kaltem Bier.
So gegen 3.00 Uhr lagen wir dann zufrieden im Bett, hörten noch die Slade Songs in unseren Ohren und erinnerten uns an die Treffen mit Dave und Don und unsere Freude darüber.

From Helsinki to Imatra
On Friday afternoon at 15:34 the IC train left punctually the Railway station of Helsinki in the direction of Imatra. It was a very pleasant travel through the finnish landscape. We had some stops in bigger towns; Riihimäki - Lahti - Kouvola - Lappeenranta - Imatra.
SLADE had maybe the same tour, because they arrived also in Helsinki by aeroplane. On the next day they had to go back to Helsinki for the flight to Denmark and gig at Olstykke.
We arrived at the station Imatra and took a taxi to our hotel (4 km away). We were very pleased with our housing, very beautiful hotel and pension, remember the fact that we were only 7 km away from the Russian border.

Back by taxi to Imatra Center soon. We liked to have a view around the centre and go after this to the eventplace.
Our way went also to the Hotel Imatran Valtionhotelli. We found out later, that SLADE slept there.
Hotel Imatran Valtionhotelli standing by the Rapids completed in 1903. Valtionhotelli looks like a jugendstyle fairytale castle.
Running into Dave Hill on the bridge
The surprise was very big, when while walking on the bridge over the big river Vuoksi all of a sudden ! HEY ! There was DAVE HILL ! He was walking around and looking at the sceneries, there was also a big waterdam and waterfall.
What for a joy ! Of course we called him and waved him. He came to us on the other side of the street, near the hotel Imatran Valtionhotelli and we had a friendly HELLO and a short talk with him.
He liked to go to the hotel after the soundcheck, maybe for rest or changing the dress.
He gave us some autographs on our SLADE pics and was baffled, that we had so much pics from
Don :-))
He watched the pics and said then "What is this ? Don, Don, Don... ! " and smiled :-)
It was a very nice talk with Dave Hill and we were very happy about this nice meeting.
To the concert arena through the nature park
We continued our way towards the concert arena lying 1 km from the center of Imatra. We walked through the first nature reserve in Finland - the Crown Park that was establisehd in 1842 by Tsar Nicholas I.
Arrived on the eventplace we`ve got our bracelet for the entry and stepped on the concertplace.
Allover we saw stalls with fanarticles (not from Slade) and some other stuff from the musicscene, also some stalls with sweets, icecream and food.
The beer tents was marked off and it was forbidden to take the beer or other alcohol with you outside to the concertplace. A VIP - tent was also there, with a separate entry, we had not a tickets for this area :-(
Meeting the best drummer in the world before the showtime
Kalle Ahola band that was playing before SLADE was getting ready for the gig and started soon to play. On stage we saw also Don for our surprise near the drums.
Of course we were looking for every step what he was doing and as soon as possible we took the chance to call him on the moment he came sidewards from the stage.
What for a luck, with all this big noize he heard our calling "Hear Me Calling" !!! :-), the other band started already the music. We waved him and showed him with some gestures, that we liked to meet him, we was behind the barrier.
Don showed us a big question mark on his face, do you know me ??? Oh YES !!! Loud, so loud as possible.."please, can you come to us ??" The closer he got to us the bigger the smile grew on his face. It was a fantastic to meet him after a long time. We gave hugs and said some words, was pity that the music started already and in a big noize, we were near the loudspeakers in front of the stage. Don asked if we have a VIP card, pity NO, we have not, so we said.
"Wait please a moment, I will go and try to get two", Don said. But without success, he was after our talk also very buzy again and was away a moment coming back soon. The band before SLADE finished the gig and then Don came on stage again for checkup the drums, he was the only one from Slade, who was there. He saw us again and gave us a frindly smile and a waved to us. So we had also the chance to make some nice pics of Don from the soundcheck.
John Berry came only short on the stage for the last check up later and we waved him, but he had both hands in the trouserpockets, took not a notice of us and showed us the back, when he was for the guitarcheck.
5 - 4 - 3 - 2 - 1 Slade are go
The time was over for waiting ! SLADE came on stage and the audience gave them a big welcome.
"Cum On Feel The Noize", the first song. The setlist was almost the same as in Denmark. See later please.
Dave was in a fantastic mood, he jumped on the stage with a lot of energy and lightness, it was so great to watch him. With the smile on his face, he put the smile on our face too!
Dave presented the band to the audience in a rousing way, all were enthusiastic and sang the songs, so loud as possible ! Dave animated of course also the audience to do this :-)
John Berry showed also more rhythmically movements and gave a good show.
Don is really amazing, he made a hard job again, he was brilliant, as well as Dave.
Mal McNulty, our first gig where we heard and saw him , was also very good. His voice is another than Steves, of course, much deeper and louder, closer to the voice of Noddy, but never Noddy. He seemed concentrated and not so cool. Of course this all needs time, but he did also a very good job.

Merry Xmas Everybody (Dave came with the red Christmas hat on stage and the audience was calling "YÄÄÄÄHHH" )
All in all it was a very good gig. The audience was enthusiastic, close us, probably the youngest SLADE fan of the evening, maybe 5 years old, together with her sister and parents, sang some songs and had a selfmade poster "We love SLADE - we love Dave and Don " in the hands over the head, for present the declaration of love to SLADE.
We met also SLADE fans from Helsinki and other finnish SLADE fans. It was a success evening, was cold, but so it is, when you have full moon and cold beer :-)
On our way to the taxi station we went by the hotel, where SLADE slept and said in our thoughts once more THANKS for the good gig and the great sound and wished a good travel back to Helsinki and Denmark.
At 3am we were peacefully in the bed and heard the SLADE sound still in our ears, also with the memory of the meeting with Dave and Don :-)
In the morning we left after the breakfast the hotel soon and drove with taxi to the station. We had still half an hour time until the IC train took us for the travel back to Helsinki. We walked a little bit near the station around the very nice park near the river and enjoyed the sunbeams. Was a nice experience !

"Rock To The River"-festivaali Imatralla

Menimme keskustaan taksilla. Halusimme vähän tutustua ympäristöön ja sen jälkeen mennä tapahtumapaikalle. Kuljimme myös Imatran Valtionhotellin ohi ja myöhemmin saimme tietää, että Slade oli majoittunut sinne.
Aluksi hieman tietoa Imatran kaupungista:

- Etelä-Suomessa
- 7 km päässä Venäjän rajalta
- 210 km Pietariin
- 230 km Helsinkiin
Meidän junamme lähti klo 15:34 Helsingin rautatieasemalta aikataulun mukaisesti Imatralle, 230 km päähän. Se oli erittäin miellyttävä matka Suomen maisemien läpi pysähtyen neljässä suuremmassa kaupungissa. Meidän kiertue alkoi Helsingistä - Riihimäki - Lahti - Kouvola - Lappeenranta - Imatralle. Slade teki luultavasti suurin piirtein saman matkan, kun he laskeutuivat Helsinkiin perjantaina ja sunnuntaiaamuna he lähtivät Helsingistä Tanskaan. Kun saavuimme Imatran asemalle, otimme taksin, joka vei meidät hotelliin (4 km).Olimme erittäin tyytyväisiä, koska asunto oli hyvin kaunis ja myös hotelli, jossa oli myös majatalo. Tämä muistutti siitä, että olimme vain 7 km Venäjän rajalta.
Suuri yllätys äkkiä.. Hei! Sehän oli Dave Hill !
Hän tuli kävellen sillan yli, joka ylittää padon ja vesiputouksen. Mikä ilo. Tietenkin kutsuimme häntä innoissamme ja hän tuli meidän luoksemme tien yli. Se ei ollut kovin kaukana hotellista - hän olisi ollut varmasti menossa hotelliin rentoutumaan soundcheckin jälkeen.
Meillä oli lyhyt, mutta erittäin mukava jutteluhetki Daven kanssa. Hän antoi muutamia nimikirjoituksia valokuviin, joita meillä oli mukana.
Hän oli hämmästynyt, kun hän näki niin paljon kuvia Donista. Hän otti kuvia ja sanoi "Voi, mitä tämä on? Don ... Don ... Don ... " ja nauroi! Daven kanssa oli mukava jutella ja olimme hyvin iloisia kohtaamisestamme.
Kun saavuimme konsertipaikalle saimme rannekkeen ja pääsimme sisään. Sinne oli rakennettu monia myyntipaikkoja, joista voi ostaa erilaisia tavaroita ja musiikkielämään liittyviä juttuja, tietenkin. Sellä oli paljo makeisia, jäätälöä ja ruokaa. Olutteltat olivat rajatulla alueella, juomia ei saanut viedä sieltä pois. Siellä oli myös VIP-alue, mutta valitettavasti meillä ei ollut pääsyä sinne :-)
Kalle Aholan bändi soitti ennen Sladea. Yhtäkkiä näimme Don lavan taustalla rumpujen lähellä. Tietenkin seurasimme häntä ja kun hän poista lavalta vasemmalle puolelle, meillä oli mahdollisuus kutsua häntä. Mikä ilo, vaikka oli jo kova melu, koska bandi aloitti juuri silloin soittamaan. Hän kuuli meitä kuitenkin. Me vilkutimme hänelle ja viittoilimme häntä tulemaan luoksemme, koska olimme aidan takana. Hän näytti isolta kysymysmerkiltä: Tarkoitatko minua? Kyllä, kyllä, voisitko tulla meidän luoksemme? Don tuli lähemmäksi ja lähemmäksi ystävällinen hymy kasvoillaan. Se oli fantastinen jälleennäkeminen taas hänen kanssansa. Me halasimme ja vaihdoimme muutamia sanoja. Valitettavasti musiikki oli hyvin kovaa, koska olimme kaiuttimien edessä.
Don kysyi, onko meillä VIP-kortti. Mutta valitettavasti meillä ei ollut VIP-korttia :-) Hän pyysi meitä odottamaan, hän saisi meille. Valitettavasti hänelle ei ole ollut mahdollisuutta kuitenkaan. Hänellä oli vain vähän aikaa. Myöhemmin hän ajoi hotelliin, mutta hän tuli aikaisemmin takaisin ja oli taas ensimmäinen lavalla, heti, kun yhtye Kalle Ahola oli lopettanut heidän ohjelmansa. Hän vilkutti meille ja hymyili ystävällisesti. Sitten näimme hänet koko soundcheckin ajan ja oli taas mukava ottaa kuvia hänestä.
John Berry tuli myöhemmin ja vain hyvin lyhyesti tarkistamaan kitaransa lavalla. Me tervehdimme häntäkin, mutta hänellä oli kädet taskuissa ja hän ei huomannut meiltä. Kesti vielä jonkin aikaa, ennenkuin Slade kuulutettiin lavalle.
Sitten tuli mahtava hetki ja konsertti alkoi. "Cum On Feel The Noize" oli ensimmäinen kappale.
Settilista oli hieman normaalia lyhyempi Imatralla.
Dave oli fantastisella tuulella ja hän hyppi lavalla hyvin elinvoimaisesti ja kevyesti. Oli hienoa katsella häntä.
