Slade played their first ever gig on 1st May 1966 (according to Noddy Holder, singer and guitarist) at Walsall Town Hall and the last one at Cow Palace in San Fransisco in March 1984. The band played together last time at 25th Anniversary Convention in the same place exactly 25 years later on the 1st April 1991, when Jim, Nod, Don and Dave played only one song (Johnny B Goode !) for the fans. Slade released their last record in December 1991 - Universe single.

How about Slade at Reading 1980? They blew the opposition off Stage. A band without a hit record for yonks, on the verge of splitting up, came and did what they did best, playing rock and enjoying it too. Between 1976 and 1980 Slade were having a rough time. Radio play as practically non-existant and guitarist Dave Hill was adamant at the time that he wanted nothing to do with Slade. He'd actually gone into the wedding car biz. Some sweet talking by then manager Chas Chandler, persuaded him to do Reading. The rest is history.What other band could get away with playing a Christmas song in the middle of summer? Slade was formed in Wolverhampton in the spring of 1966. In the beginning of 1966 Jim Lea was auditioned to the band as bass player and soon after that founder members guitarist Dave Hill and drummer Don Powell asked Noddy Holder to join up with them.

The singer of The N`Betweens on the first half of 1966 was Johnny Howells, and Noddy Holder was mostly playing rhythm guitar and sometimes vocals. With Slade line-up Dave Hill, Noddy Holder, Jim Lea and Don Powell The N`Betweens had first rehearsal together in March 1966 in the Three Men In A Boat pub on the Beechdale Estate.

The first show (with Howells) was at Walsall Town Hall on 1st April 1966. Slade`s last live performance was in the same place 25 years later in 1991, when they played only one song "Johnny B Goode" at Slade Fan Convention.

Noddy Holder was taking more part in vocals and in the summer of 1966 the group said gudbuy to Johnny Howells.

N`Betweens released the first single "You Better Run" / "Evil Witchman" on 2nd December 1966 (Columbia DB8080). Slade`s last record "Universe" was released exactly 25 years later.

Citizens of Penticton, B.C., small town western Canada, generally waved at the tour jets as they flew over. We dreamt of the trip to Vancouver to see the real groups; the Zeppelins, Deep Purples, Black Sabbaths, et al.

As fate would have it, Wolverhampton`s notoriously loud boys (bo eeeez), Slade graced us with their presence one hot summer evening in 1975. The audience gathered in what is known as the Peach Bowl, not a bowl at all, rather a large convention barn, named after the fuzzy fruit grown on the fertile hills surrounding town. Penticton was to be the envy of western Canada for a summer.

Now, Penticton has a reputation of being the California of Canada, a strip of arid land between two magnificent lakes. It is a quaint town of 25000 which swells to 75000 for July and August, attracting: California biker gangs, Airstream trailer conventions and international softball tournaments. Even Cheech and Chong spent their juvenile summers partaking in the liberal and frequent drug culture of the Okanagan.

Now, I think Slade had just released their peak-of-style-cum-end-of-era opus, Nobody`s Fool months before. (don`t chastise me if I`m wrong, it was a quarter century ago; hell, I can hardly remember what I had for dinner last night) Suffice it to say, the boys were in peak touring form and remain the loudest band I`ve ever heard. (eat your hearts out Blue Oyster Cult and Who fans)

The Peach Bowl was packed, 3500 screaming eager fans sweating and stomping, awaiting the band`s arrival. We were briefly entertained by the opening act, the young and greenhorn Sweeney Todd, led by the glam-stickman, Nick Gilder. Sweeney Todd would later become local faves, even garnering national status, but they were under appreciated and overlooked by the Slade-thirsty mob.

Finally the moment arrived; the flashpots, the smoke, the roar of the crowd and finally, the noise. Music loud enough to stand your hair horizontal; like an erstwhile Maxell commercial; we stood bravely in the onslaught of wind-generating sonic music.

Dave Hill, seeming seven feet tall in his towering boots, oval forehead of red hair, took front stage left and squelched out chords to the adoring crowd. On several occasions, kindly fans held their sweetly smoking joints up to Dave, an offering in exchange for his aural assaults. He looked perplexed, not sure if he should accept the weed, or stand cool and maintain his celebrity/fan phantom safety-zone. (these were the days before steel barricades and beefcake security drones betwixt the audience and the band) He chose to remain chaste and, in honor of his smoke-free stance, fans decided to throw unlit spliffs onto the stage, much like fans toss gladiolas to Morrissey these days.

Noddy Holder was his impish gesturing self; resplendent in tartan trousers and suspenders, shorty tophat perched on his wild flaming red moptop, looking every bit the psychotic leprechaun. His gravelly, octave-higher-than-expected screams were perfect fodder for Hill`s squelching riffs. Every song seemed to have those ill-spelled, sing-a-long "oyz" and "eez" sounds in them.

C`mon feel the noize, Nobody`s Fool, Gudbuy T`Jane, Darlin` be home soon (an old Lovin` Spoonful ballad) all chang-ged out, ringing inside the mammoth hall as the joints rained onstage.

Everybody left happy, hot and ears a-ringing. The bikers returned to their flop houses on the beach. The wide-eyed kids returned to their bewildered parents who were waiting in their slick silver trailers. (lined up like a makeshift trailer-park awaiting a tornado) The soft-ballers returned to their tent trailers and motels, delving into what was left of their beer and pot and kkeping the party spirit alive.

Slade alive.

I`m sure the pimply-faced kid with the broom made a clean sweep of the stage after the band had said its goodnights.

SLADE Gig reports - remember on a great time !!!! 1973 / 1976

Slade ruled for sure!


I remember seeing SLADE in '76! The lineup was Dr. Feelgood,
Slade, and Blue Oyster Cult headlining. I'd never heard of
Feelgood before but, they kicked ass! I remeber Lee Brilleaux's
harp blowing thru the PA sounded like it was inside my head,
and Wilko's onstage antics were wild!

When SLADE came on next they blew the roof off! Slade's live
sound was always LOUD! No compromises. They musta had a good
sound man that knew his shit. I recall they did 2 songs off
each album out then. I remember Nod with his mirrored top hat
singing 'How does it Feel' and twirling his finger in the air
to 'running around 'round 'round..' Wish I could remember more..

When I listen to Slade now, I find it hard to believe that such
talent has been literally erased from musical history, It's
like the Twilight Zone or something, Whatever happened to Slade?
I guess us bunch keep them alive for what it's worth... I always
find myself critical of other singers too, after listening to Nod...
IMHO NO ONE COMES CLOSE...

Slade At Winterland Arena In San Francisco - December 1973


Forgot to mention -- when I saw Slade at Winterland arena in San
Francisco in December 1973, we wouldn't let the band leave the
building at the end of their set! Normally, if the band was hot,
we could get two encores out of them. Well, we got two out of them,
but we demanded more! We slapped. We stomped. We screamed. We held
our cigarette lighters up. And kept it up for at least 10 minutes.
The Bill Graham Presents people (who put on the show) finally had
to relent and let Slade go onstage for one more tune! What a moment!
They did a Chuck Berry tune. Can't remember the name. As we drove
home that night, my friend demanded that he borrow my Slade Alive
album the moment we got home. We really argued about it. But I
finally let him take it. I listened that night to Slayed?!!!

Slade celebrate their 40th Anniversary in 2006.

Legendary Dave Hill, Noddy Holder, Jim Lea and Don Powell line-up was formed in March 1966 as The N`Betweens. In 60`s they were looking after their musical style, name changes: Ambrose Slade - Slade.
First hit in 1971 with Little Richard song Get Down With It. In the end of 1971 Lea-Holder started to write songs, in November 1971 Coz I Luv You hit to no 1 spot. The next three years were Slade triumph them being number one band in the Modern world. Slade brought joy back to rock music and stage.
Late 70`s meant stormish club and universities gigs but quiet years in media. The start of the next decade brought Slade back from dead. At Reading ´80 and Donington ´81 festivals Slade blew off the stage all heavy bands.
Next years 1982-1984 showed more harmonic side of Slade with massive My Oh My and Run Runaway hits. Slade were finally making a breakthrough in America also, but then in March 1984 they stopped playing live. That meant actually the end of the greatest live band ever.
Latter side of 80`s brought still two studio albums and some collections, but the boyz were concerning in their own doings.
Once more in 1991 Slade went into studio and got a minor hit with Radio Wall of Sound. The follow-up Universe, a symphonic song being one of the finest Slade tunes, didn't follow the chart success. This was actually the end of the 25 years career of Slade as Jim, Nod, Dave and Don, though they never officially said that Slade had finished.
In the end of 1992 Dave and Don put together Slade II starting to tour around the world but mostly in Europe. Nod went to radio and tv and Jim has been making his solo projects and one concert in 22 years!
Dave and Don have been keeping alive the great spirit of the unique Slade live feeling and making some records with Slade II till the day, when they have been 40 years on the road.
Feel the Noize and Keep On Rockin`through the four decades!

Hi Slade people,
Do any of you know where the very first gig that the future Slade played
together as a four piece in 1966?
I know it was somewhere in the south west of England - some say Torquay,
others Plymouth. Can anyone provide a definitive answer?

The band that was to become Slade did not play Walsall Town Hall on April 1, 1966 although that is the "official" story. They played Walsall Town Hall on March 19, 1966. Before that they had, however, played Torquay, just the four of them. At that point Don, Dave, Jim and Nod had a singer called Johnny Howells, but one night he didn't make it to the gig. Don told me the following about this:

"In those days in England in the holiday resorts we used to play there at a ballroom or a club for the week, every night for a week. And we had to play this club in Torquay called the 400 Club. And we used to stay in a tiny caravan because it was cheap for the week. It used to cost £15 for the week this caravan, perfect. And we were playing in this club and one night Johnny didn't want to play. He asked us if we could do it on our own because he had met this girl and he wanted to take her out that night on a date. And we said, yeah, we'll try it. That was the FIRST time that we could play together just the four of us. And it went FAN-TASTIC! We were in such high spirits. Such high. As we drove back to the caravan we said, but we'd better be careful when we get back with Johnny because of the high spirits. He is not going to be very happy. It got even worse when we got to the caravan because the girl he was seeing that night didn't turn up! So he'd spent that night in the caravan on his own!"

Bevor SLADE von ihrem Manager Chas Chandler entdeckt wurden, waren sie nichts anderes als eine von Hunderten Provinzgruppen, wie sie jährlich nach London kamen.
Hier wollten sie ihr Glück machen, den Traum vom großen Hitparadenerfolg verwirklichen.

Nur wenige schafften das. Bis es soweit war hausten sie in den billigen und unbequemen Hotels in der Nähe des Bahnhofs Paddington.

Ratlos wie alle anderen Musiker fanden sie sich im Irrgarten des englischen Musikgeschäftes nicht zurecht. Und London war das Zentrum - mit seinem Plattenstudios, Musikverlagen, Plattenfirmen und Clubs. Aber erreichen konnte nur der etwas, der auch den richtigen Schlüssel besaß.
SLADE hatte ihn damals nicht.

Ähnlich wie SLADE war auch Chas Chandler aufgewachsen. Allerdings lebte er schon zwei Jahre in London und kannte sich aus im Irrgarten des Musikgeschäftes.
Ohne ihn wären SLADE verloren gewesen, wie er bei seiner Ankunft in London.

1964 war das gewesen: Die Animals waren eine vielversprechende Gruppe und hatten mit dem Song „ House of the rising Sun“ einen Millionenhit.

Als Chas Chandler im Juli 1966 seinen Baß in die Ecke stellte hatte er gerade knapp 8000 Mark auf seinem Konto.

Während seiner letzten Amerika - Tournee als Bassist der Animals sah Chas Chandler einer bis dahin unbekannten Gitarristen in einem kleinen Club im Newe Yorker Stadtteil Greenwich Village. Es war Jimi Hendrix. Die beiden freundeten sich an, Chandler bezahlte ihm ein Flugticket nach London.
Die folgenden drei Jahre managte er Jimi Hendrix, und er produzierte die ersten Platten des Superstars. Es waren die erfolgreichsten Jahre von Jimi Hendrix. Doch die Wege trennten sich.

Eines Tages klingelte bei Chandler das Telefon im Büro. Ein Talentsucher war am anderen Ende und erzählte von einer Gruppe Ambrose SLADE. Sie suchten noch einen Manager.

Der Auftritt war im Londoner Rasputin Club, Chandler ging hin und dachte beim Herabsteigen der Treppen in den Keller-Club als er Musik hörte
„ Wahnsinnig diese Platte „, es war ein bekannter Song, aber in einer neuen Version.

Aber es war keine Platte, der Song wurde von einer Gruppe gespielt...und somit war schon alles für Chandler entschieden.

Die Jungs von Ambrose SLADE waren noch blutjung, halbe Kinder fast.
Sie machten eine Menge Spaß, das Publikum ging voll mit.
Sie versuchten nicht die besten Musiker der Welt zu sein, sie wollten einfach nur Spaß haben.

Als Chas Chandler die Gruppe traf hatten sie zuvor schon 3 Jahre als „ N`Betweens“ auf dem Buckel.
Den Namen Ambrose SLADE hatte ihnen ihre erste Plattenfirma Fontana kurz vorher verpasst, als sie den ersten Plattenvertrag unterschrieben.

Anfang 1969, kurz bevor sie Chas Chandler unter seine Fittiche als Manager nahm, hatten sie die erste LP „ Beginnings“ und die Single „ Genesis“ aufgenommen.

Es ist ein einfache Besetzung - trügerisch einfach - denn die Gruppe hat einen Trumpf in ihren Reihen, das selbst das zäheste Publikum nach mehr verlangen lässt.
Es ist die wahnsinnigste Art des Geigespielens von James Whild Lea.


Jim Lea begann als 9-Jähriger mit diesem Instrument zu spielen, schloß sich dem Staffordshire Jugend-Orchester an, als er älter wurde.

Der Höhepunkt einer jeden Bühnenshow ist sein Spiel auf der Geige.

Die meisten Songs hat die Gruppe selbst komponiert. Jim, David und Noddy - dessen Geburtsname Neville ist - sind dabei die führenden Köpfe.

Im Jahr 1969 waren die Skinheads groß in Mode.
SLADE waren Englands erste Skinhead - Gruppe. Im typischen Rockerlook ließen sie sich fotografieren - mit Stiefeln, Jeans und Fahrradketten und sie sahen auf den Foto`s immer mürrisch aus.
Doch dieses Image schadete ihnen nur. Die Platte „ Wild`Winds are blowing“ verschwand genauso schnell in der Versenkung wie die erste SLADE-Single.

Es wurde immer deutlicher, das Image eines Skinheads war negativ, Tatsächlich zweifelten damals die Skinheads an SLADE. Und SLADE beklagte sich, dass sie mit ihren scheinbaren Freunden Streit bekamen. Schlägereien waren nicht selten. Veranstalter weigerten sich daraufhin SLADE für Kontzerte zu engagieren, machten schon unterschriebene Verträge auch wieder rückgängig.

Doch Chas Chandler verlor niemals den Glauben an die Gruppe.
Er wusste, dass Slade etwas Neues zu bieten hatte.

Er gab seinen sicheren Job bei Robert Stigwood auf ( Stigwood hatte seine größten Erfolge als Manager von den Bee Gees and Cream.
Er wollte sich ganz der Karriere der Gruppe widmen.
Man nahm ganz schnell Abstand von Stiefeln, Jeans und rasselnden Fahrradketten als man begriffen hatte, dass es nur ein Hindernis für den Weg nach oben war.
Es spielte keine Rolle, darüber zu streiten, ob es nützlich oder sinnlos war - das Ziel wurde erreicht, den Leuten zu sagen : „ SLADE ist da !! „

1970 wechselte die Gruppe das Image, sie ließen die Haare wieder wachsen und unterschrieben einen Plattenvertrag, diesmal bei Polydor.

Als erste Single bei der neuen Firma kam die Single „ Know who you are „ am
18. September.
Es passierte nichts. Auch nicht, als im November 1970 die LP „ Play it loud“ erschien.

SLADE tingelte weiter in kleinen Clubs und Tanzsälen, da himmelten die Fans sie an.

Besonders erfolgreich waren SLADE mit dem alten Little Richard Song
„ Get Down And Get With it“
Mit dem rauen stampfenden Lied brachten sie ihr Publikum immer wieder in Fahrt.

Oft spielten sie das Stück über 5 - 7 Minuten, wiederholten den Refrain und forderten die Leute zum Mitsingen auf.
Chas Chandler schlug vor, dieses Lied auf drei Minuten zu kürzen.
1971 kam die Scheibe auf den Markt.
Slade waren gerade in Holland auf Tournee. Ende Juni platzierten sie sich zum 1. mal unter den ersten fünfzig der Hitparade. Im August kletterten sie auf die ersten dreißig - zu einer Zeit, als sie in England auf Tournee waren.
Bis auf den 16. Platz kamen SLADE.

Zu dieser Zeit waren die Haare wieder ganz normal, privat trugen sie meist ganz gewöhnliche Klamotten - sogar Samtjacken und Krawatte gehörten mit dazu. Und auf der Bühne waren die Anzüge auffallend bunt.
Noddy liebte weitgeschnittene Hosen, rote Hemden, gelbe Gürtel und einen Hut.
Dave und Jim bevorzugten die Glitzermode und Don verkroch sich hinter seinem Schlagzeug in normalen, nüchternen Straßenanzügen.

Chas Chandler war immer mit dem Geld vorsichtig, machte ihnen klar, wie viel sie mit ihrem ersten Hit verdient hätten- wenn sie dass Lied komponiert hätten.

So aber floß es in die Tasche von Little Richard. Slade kapierte schnell, auf dieser erfolgreichen Platte hatten sie zum ersten Mal einen Song verändert, sie hatten ihren Stampfsound gebracht. Dadurch unterschied sich die Platte wesentlich vom Original.
Es war fast ein neues Lied entstanden.
Aber dennoch waren sie ängstlich, eigene Songs aufzunehmen. Vorallem weil Jim Lea die besten Einfälle als Komponist hatte. Als gelernter Geiger war dieser Einfluß aber bei all seinen Stücken vorherrschend.
Slade fürchtete sich, ihn besonders herauszustellen, denn die meisten Fans wußten nichts von dieser musikalischen Vergangenheit.

Noddy zu George Tremlett : „ Wenn er dieses Instrument schon beherrscht, wollten wir auch das beste daraus machen. Entscheidend war der richtige Zeitpunkt.
Eines Tages zeigte Jim mir seine Kompositionen. Ich griff seine Ideen auf, komponierte einpaar eingängige Refrains dazu, machte das ganze rockiger. Wir saßen nur so zusammen im Wohnzimmer, ich klimperte auf meiner akustischen Gitarre - bis wir es hatten.“
An diesem Abend entstand das neue Komponisten-Team Noddy Holder - Jim Lea.
Das Ergebnis vieler durchwachter Nächte war die SLADE Single „ Coz I Lov You“.
Sie erschien am 08. Oktober 1971 und wurde der erste Nummer-Eins-Hit der Gruppe in England.
Zu dieser Zeit waren die vier in Deutschland gerade mit „ Get Down And Get With it“ ganz kurz in der Hitparade.


„ Cuz I Luv You“ tauchte in Deutschland Ende Dezember 1971 auf und kam immerhin unter die ersten Zehn in der Hitparade.
Mit diesem Song setzte SLADE Zeichen, musikalisch und in der Rechtschreibung.
Sie schrieben einen Songtitel so wie er gesprochen wird - entgegen aller Regeln der Orthographie. Das sollte in Zukunft ein Markenzeichen für die Gruppe werden.
Das fiel auf und darüber wurde gesprochen, aber in einer angenehmen Art anders als über die mißglückten Versuche der Skinheads.

Noddy Holder und Jim Lea komponierten von da an ihre Songs selbst. Somit blieb das Geld in der Gruppe.
Anders, als bei erfolgreichen Bands wie SWEET, MUD, THE RUBETTES, SUZI QUATRO und die BAY CITY ROLLERS, die ihren Erfolg einem Komponisten-team außerhalb der Gruppe zu verdanken hatten.

Vorteil war auch, daß SLADE mit wachsendem Erfolg auch mehr Geld einnahmen als die Mitbewerber.
Hier war es Chas Chandler, der immer warnend eingriff, wenn SLADE anfingen, das Geld sinnlos zu verprassen.
So schaffte es SLADE ihren alten Lebenstil weiterzuführen, in billigen Hotels zu wohnen und das gesamte verdiente Geld wieder in die Gruppe zu investieren.
Eine bessere Bühnenanlage wurde gekauft, eine bessere Lightshow und bessere Bühnengarderbobe.
Chas Chandler achtete immer darauf, daß SLADE schuldenfrei blieben.

26. Mai 1972 Vierter Hit “ Take Me Bak`Ome`” erscheint.
25. August 1972 5. Hit “ Mama Weer All Crazee Now”

18. Oktober 1972 SLADE werden von den Radio Luxemburg-Hörern ( englisches Programm) zur Gruppe des Jahres gewählt.

1973 27. Januar Englands Fans wählen SLADE zur besten englischen Gruppe.

1973 Februar 7. Hit „ Cum On Feel The Noize“

1973 war SLADE die Nr. 1 in Finland

war aber auch ein sehr hartes und entscheidendes Jahr für die Gruppe.
Don Powell verunglückt am 04. Juli mit seinem Bentley. Seine Freundin Angela Morris stirbt. Don verliert das Gedächtnis und seinen Geschmackssinn.Er liegt sechs Wochen im Krankenhaus.
Frank Lea - Lims Bruder - steigt als Ersatzmann für Don ein, er gibt mit SLADE zwei Konzerte.
Am 01. September steht die zweite Amerika Tournee an, als Vorgruppe für Humble Pie.

Am 21. September wird die LP „ Sladest“ veröffentlicht.
Auf dieser Platte „Wild Winds are blowing“ ( die erste Single als SLADE ).........


28. September 1973 der 9. Hit erscheint „ My Friend Stan“, kommt in die deutschen Hitparaden Ende Oktober


Am 22. Oktober 1973 endet die US- Tournee.

Es folgt eine Europa- Tournee, vom 25. Oktober bis 20. November 1973 ist SLADE auf Deutschland-Tournee.

1974 10. Hit von SLADE „ Merry X-mas Everybody“, 07. Dezember,
noch am selben Tag werden 310.000 Platten verkauft. SLADE überschreitet weit die Millionengrenze, in Deutschland kommt die Platte drei Wochen später in die Hitparade.
