Wolfgang Weber is talking about the meeting with Noddy Holder in June 2007 at Manchester for the interview :

My zylinder is in a safe in a bank
They wore colorful rags and platformboots, but much more important as their shrill outfit was and it still is today their music: the group SLADE were in the 70ies one of the founders of the glamrock and they can take a look back to a longstanding set of hits, that can only be compared to The Beatles: between 1971 and 1976 band`s every single was in the Top 20, six of them on the top. Their success is not honoured only through their catchy "join the singing refrains, but also through interesting spelling style ("Coz I Luv You" , " Mama Weer All Crazee Now", " Cum On Feel The Noize" or "Skweeze Me, Pleeze Me" for example).
The Christmas single "Merry Christmas Everybody" has since its release in 1973 come out regularly in the charts. "A good retire", as Noddy Holder (61) in a long talk at Manchester told to the SONNTAG.
Holder and bassist Jim Lea left the originally in 1966 as "The N`Betweens" founded group in 1991. Guitarist Dave Hill and drummer Don Powell are still touring with new musicians in the whole Europe as Slade and take care of maintaining good mood in the oldie festivals.
A short time ago all Slade vinyls were re-released. Most of them include never before published bonus tracks. Last year was published also an exquisite "Slade-box" with 4 CD`s and two weeks ago came out a double CD "B-sides" package.
Interview
Mr. Holder, in 1991 you left the band SLADE after 25 years. The royalties flow still plentifully, so that you don`t certainly need no more to work in your life. What are you doing nowadays ?
Holder: Oh, very different kind of art and games. I have my own BBC show at Radio 2, the biggest radio channel in the Great Britain. I do a lot of promotion. I do practically everyday other kind of things. But I love this. It is much more varied than those 25 years in Slade. There was always the same rhythm. Album, tour, album, tour. That`s great, but 25 years of that is enough.
You make also a good figure at the TV. Do you see yourself more as a musician or as an actor ?
Holder: Certainly as a musician. I`m not an actor ! At "The Grimleys", a comedy series, in which I played a teacher, this I have done only, because it was one of the funniest scripts that I have ever read. But being an actor isn`t anything that I would like to do as for a job.
Germany was always important for you. With your first band Steve Brett you played in Frankfurt and Cologne with the N`Betweens, the predecessor group of Slade, later in Kiel. Do you have a special relationship to Germany ? Holder: Oh yes ! Germany was the first country that I have visited outside of England. In 1964 we came to Frankfurt, we played from 9 o`clock in the evening till 4 o`clock in the morning, on Saturdays we started already at 2 o`clock in the afternoon.
It was sex, drugs and rock`n`roll. I was 16 or 17, it was my introduction in the world. It was simply just fantastic ! In the early 60`s people in Germany were much more openminded than in the conservative England. With the famous swinging sixties people connect London and the Beatles, but in Germany that all was happening already a couple of years earlier, in the late 50`ies and very early 60`ies.
Will Slade ever again play in the original line-up ?Holder: I think not ! Even though we in practise get an offer for a charity concert or for a "re-union" every year. But if you will make then a onetime charity show, then there will be soon record companies coming and wanting you to make a tour. And then comes the European tour. And then Japan and America. And suddenly you will be again busy for two years.
Your old band fellows Dave Hill and Don Powell are touring as always through the Europe and they are playing old Slade hits. Have you ever seen their concert ?Holder: No, I have never seen them. It would be very strange for me to go and see a group that is playing our old hits. Dave and Don wanted to go touring again and that`s okay. And when they wanted to make that under the name Slade, then it`s their decision.
What kind of feeling is it to be hearing the Christmas song "Merry X-mas" for over 30 years every year on the radio ?Holder: That makes me very proud. When I wrote that song 34 years ago, I didn`t think, that it would be so successful for such a long time. Many people tell me that they won`t believe that it`s Christmas until they have heard this song. It is after "White Christmas" the best known Christmas song of all the times.
You have got two grown-up daughters and a twelve-year-old son. Do your children use to listen to your old Slade vinyls ?Holder: Yes, above all my son Django loves Slade and rock music in general. And he is the only one at his class, who has even heard about the Beatles. Seriously !
Kids from today don`t know the Beatles any more ! It is unbelievable !
His teacher asked once in the schoolclass, who knows the Beatles and not anyone else besides him knew them ! Unbelievable !
Were your parents proud of you ?Holder: Oh yes, I think so. Even though my mother kept asking me even when I was already 50, when will I finally get a real job ! She didn`t realize how popular I was until I was a guest of honour in the big TV show "This is your life". She was impressed about me getting to know there her favourite moderator Michael Aspel, wo hosted the show. It wasn`t until a couple of years later when I was appointed a "Member of British Empire" by the Queen in Buckingham Palace that she took notice that I was really famous and I must have done something right in my life.
Where is your famous mirror zylinder ?Holder: It is safe in a safe in a bank. No-one will get it, not even any museum. It is far too valuable for me.
Do you still get much fan mails ?Holder: Yes, very much. A lot of people donŽt know exactly where they should send it. And so it happens over and over again that there are letters arriving to me with an address of mere "Noddy Holder, England".
