We were " Far Far Away " ........2.200 km away from Helsinki.
Our tour began on Friday morning 9th September at 6:00 hour. By taxi we drove to the Helsinki/Vantaa airport. Our airplane started 7:55 hour, so there was enough time for the check-in and reading the newspaper still.
The first flight was to Copenhagen and after a break with check-in to other airplane we flew to Belgium - Airport Zaventem. Arrival at 10:45, we called Lidwien and Adri - SLADE fans from the Netherlands. They were, as prearranged, already on the way at car to the airport.
We had a very warm welcome and for Moni was it the first personally meeting with both. They took us by car to the hotel in Brussels-Schaerbeek - Lidwien gave a perfect routplaner-explanations.
After some coming and going, we had all our room and we were happy to lay the legs high for a short time.
In Brussels on Friday and Saturday
After the break we started together a trip into Brussels. It was very impressive, to meet this pulsating town with so a great architecture and this strange arragement of different architecture epochs, mostly
"Jugendstil".

We had a funny time and good talk in the restaurant and the people there were very friendly and gave us a really good feeling. The Saturday was also planned for a trip once more to the centre of Brussels - the "Grote Markt" ! Beautiful ! And a cartoonparade, Adri was enthusiastic, he is also a fan of cartoons. So much people, so many impressions, we had lunch in one of the countless restaurants in the restaurant-street near the "Grote Markt", all this gave us the feelings from the flair of Brussels.
We started together with Adri and Lidwien, pity that it was a little bit too late, but an other car was parked in front of the hotelgarage-gateway.
After more than ½ hour waiting we could start and with us the rain. The rain came so strong, that the windscreen needed the full power, but we saw only the backlight from the cars in front of us.
Lidwien was the travel-courier again and adopted the explanations for the tour. So we found soon the eventplace where Slade should play. We arrived there and met soon some Slade fans from Belgium. Sylvie from www.amazingslade.net and Jean Voortmans from www.poplinks.be ,
also Daniel DeCoster.
During the concert Ilpo had also the pleasure to shake hands with Philippe, but regrettably not a chance to meet him no more.
The rain came short after us to La Hulpe too and so had to go into the event-marquee. There played a coverband and it was a very good atmosphere and much people too.

We got a very good place in front of the stage. We went to a securityman and arranged a short meeting after the gig backstage with Don. Thanks a lot to this friendly man.
Don Powell was the same as in Imatra / Finland, on stage already behind the drums. So we had the chance to take some pics of him. We waved him and he waved us back. :-)
It was to be ready now !
Dave Hill, John Berry and Mal McNulty came on stage and the show was going on. The audience gave a fantastic welcome and from the first moment we felt this enthusiasm of the people there.
Dave was in an extraordinary and brilliant mood, full with energy and power. As well Don behind the drums, with the full dedication and enthusiasm. It did not take a long time until the first broken drumsticks came from the stage into the hands from joyful fans.
Mal was also very brilliant and much more relaxed than at Imatra some weeks earlier. Moni got some days ago an email from Mal where he wrote: "I am still struggling a bit to get all the songs right but hopefully soon I will know them off by heart & can concentrate on having a good time on stage.
Steve is a good singer and of course Noddy is a legend so it is a hard act to follow.
I am going to try and get the songs to sound as much like the originals as possible.

Encores missed this time My Oh My and the band played only Born To Be Wild and Merry Xmas Everybody, though the audience was demanding loudly more. But then it was already time for other extraordinairy ceremonies for the "Awesome force of the nature"...
It was very impressive, when more than 2.000 people started to sing "Happy Birthday" for Don and a big table with a Birthday cake was brought to the stage.
A great moment - a great experience and also for Don, he was shining ! :-)

We had gotten free tickets from a security people, thanks to him :-))
We had fun, Moni was dancing with a boy from the security and after some talks and jokes we started to leave the eventplace. After a short talk with Daniel DeCoster and Goodbye to him and Jean we went together with Lidwien and Adri to the car, 1 km away from the eventplace.
We arrived at the hotel very happy about this very great evening and talked still long before we fell asleep.

Sunday / Monday
Adri and Lidwien left Brussels on Sunday and we had time enough for another walk through the town and see the Manneken Pis dressed in another costume again.

Ive had a red bandage around the wrist at La Hulpe without me even getting pissed

We took also some short movie clips (digi camera quality) from the concert and afterward Birthday congratulations meeting with Don (pity that the first best part "went to the wind").

Personally, and regarding the sold-out gig in La Hulpe/Brussels last Saturday, I'd simply like to add this:
SLADE's new singer MAL McNULTY is an ***excellent*** singer. He really is. He IS a rocker. And he fits very well in the band.
Of course, it was only his 10th gig or so and maybe he was at 90% of what he could give, but MAL says that himself and that it
As for comparing him with Noddy Holder, he's not Noddy and he knows it and he doesn't try to be.
MAL has a very powerful voice and his own qualities. What I can say is that.......... IT ROCKED!!!!!
2,000+ fans can certainly testify to this!
As for MAL backstage (I hadn't met him yet), he is a VERY friendly and interesting person! :-)
Note: it was Don's birthday and a HUGE cake was presented to him on stage (a total surprise for him) and the 2,000

Freitag 09.09.2005
6.oo Uhr morgens tragen wir unsere Tour an und furhren mit dem Taxi zum Airport Helsinki -Vaanta.
Unser Flug nach Kopenhagen ging 7.55 Uhr, so war noch genuegend Zeit zum Checkin und fuer ein Checkup der Newspaper.
In Copenhagen angekommen, hatten wir ausreichend Zeit , um uns fuer den Flug nach Bruessel einzuchecken.
Wir landeten 10.45 Uhr puenktlich in Zaventem / Belgien.
Adri und Lidwien holtenuns, wie vorher vereinbart vom Flughafen ab und es gab eine herzliche Begruessung. Ilpo hatte beide bereits auf anderen Sladekonzerten kennengelernt, doch fuer Monika
war es besonders erfreulich Sladefans aus den Niederlanden kennenzulernen.
Gemeinsam fuhren wir zum Hotel, Lidwien war eine perfekte Reiseleiterin. Nach einigem hin und her hatten wir dann unsere Zimmer und waren gluecklich unsere Beine einwenig ausstrecken zu können.
Gemeinsam starteten wir nach unserer Pause einen Trip durch die Stadt Bruessel.
Es war schon sehr beeindruckend, diese pulsierende Stadt kennenzulernen mit all der aufregenden grossartigen Architektur und der manchmal eigenartigen Zusammenstellung der unterschiedlichen Baukunstepochen. Grösstenteils kann man in Bruessel die Epoche des Jugendstil erleben.
Unzählige alte wertvolle Bausubstanz ist hier zu bewundern.
So verbrachten wir einpaar schöne Stunden in Bruessel und liessen den Abend in einem gemuetlichen Restaurant neben unserem Hotel mit belgischem Bier und Wein ausklingen.
Die Menschen waren alle sehr freundlich und wir hatten Spass zusammen. Man gab uns vom ersten Moment das Gefuehl, nicht fremd zu sein.
Der Samstag war ebenfalls fuer einen Besuch des Zentrums vorgesehen. Der "Grote Markt" - so etwas wunderschönes und dann noch eine Cartoonparade, Adri war begeistert als ebenfalls grosser Cartoonfan :-)
Viele Menschen, gutes Wetter, Spass und ein gutes Essen in einem der unzähligen Restaurants in einer der Restaurant-Strassen neben dem "Grote Markt" liessen uns so richtig den Flair Bruessels spueren.
Am Abend starteten wir dann mit Lidwien und Adri per Auto nach La Hulpe, leider etwas verspätet, aber es gab ein Problem mit einem fremden Auto, welches die Ausfahrt aus der Hotelgarage zugeparkt hatte. So konnten wir unsere Fahrt erst reichlich 30 Minuten später antreten.
Kaum gestartet und on the road begann ein kräftiger Regen, was runterkommen konnte kam auch, die scheibenwischer konnten es nicht schaffen und die Strasse war gefährlich voll mit Wasser, das gab uns nicht gerade ein gutes Gefuehl. Wir konnten nur die Ruecklichter der vor uns fahrenden Autos sehen. Doch Lidwien leistete wieder ganze Arbeit und brachte uns mit Ihrem Streckenplan sicher nach La Hulpe und Adri trotzte all`dem Regen als Fahrer.
In La Hulpe angekommen fanden wir auch sehr bald den Eventplatz, wo Slade spielen sollte. Schon nach 1 km fanden wir einen Parkplatz und die Feuerwehr in La Hulpe gewährte uns einen Parkplatz auf Ihrer Wiese :-)
Am Eventplatz angekommen, trafen wir auch schon bald paar belgische Sladefans. So Sylvie von www.amazingslade.net , Daniel Decoster und Jean Voortmans von www.poplinks.be
Der nun in La Hulpe ankommende kräftige Regen zwang uns, ins Zelt zu gehen. Dort fanden wir eine tolle Stimmung vor und eine sehr gute Coverband spielte gute Rockmusik.
Dann eine Pause, warten auf SLADE ! Wir nahmen Kontakt zu einem Mann der Security auf und baten darum, einen kurzen Moment backstage gehen zu können, um Don zu sprechen. Er holte seine Erkundungen ein und versprach uns, nach dem Konzert backstage gehen zu können. Okay, das hörte sich gut an.
Don Powell war, wie auch in Imatra / Finnland, eine ganze Zeit eher auf der Buehne,als der Rest der Band. Er sass hinter seinen Drums, rauchte paar Zigaretten und dann bemerkte er uns und winkte uns zu. So hatten wir auch Gelegenheit einpaar Foto`s von ihm zu machen.
Endlich war es soweit, SLADE wurde angekuendigt, Dave Hill, John Berry and Mal McNulty kamen auf die Buehne, das Publikum gabe Ihnen einen brausenden Empfang und die Show begann.
Dave war wieder ausserordentlich brilliant, voller Power und Energie. Auch Don Powell bearbeitete seine Drums mit vollem Einsatz und Begeisterung, so das schon sehr bald die ersten zerbrochenen Drumsticks in die Hände der freudestrahlenden Fans gelangten.
Mal McNulty war ebenfalls grossartig, er bewegte sich viel lockerer auf der Buehne und seine Stimme war so kraftvoll. Er machte seinen Job sehr gut. Alles braucht seine Zeit und er weiss es auch selbst. Als die ersten Bilder sicher in der Digi waren bekamen wir ein Zeichen, das wir das Fotografieren stoppen muessen, es ist nicht erlaubt. Sch..........:-) Monika gab an den Securityman eine Visitenkarte und sie erhielt ebenfalls eine zurueck und die Erlaubnis zum Fotografieren.
Erst später sahen wir auf der Visitenkarten, dass es Stanny Renaers war der Direktor von www.fame-international.be . An dieser Stelle herzlichen Dank an ihn, dass wir unsere Bilder gluecklich mit nach Finnland nehmen durften.
Das Publikum war gigantisch, man konnte die begeisterte Atmosphäre jede Sekunde spueren.
Sehr beeindruckend war fuer uns, als mehr als 2.ooo Menschen " Happy Birtday " fuer Don sangen und ein grosses Tablett mit dem Geburtstagskuchen auf die Buehne getragen wurde. Es war ein toller Moment, schön, dass wir das miterleben konnten und auch Don war sichtlich sehr geruehrt und bewegt darueber und machte aus lauter Freude eine spasige Andeutung, als wolle er in den Kuchen springen.
Nach dem Konzert konnten wir, wie vereinbart kurz Kontakt zu Don hinter der Buehne aufnehmen.
Es reichte fuer ein kurzes "Hello" und eine Umarmung. Don sagte: " See you later".......
Wir gingen dann hinter der Band her in das Gebäude, wo sie untergebracht waren und die Geburtstagsparty fuer Don stattfand. Von der Security erfuhren wir, dass es uns nicht möglich sein wird, Don noch einmal zu sehen. Er musste in ein Pressemeeting und anschliessend fand die private Geburtstagsparty statt. So waren wir kurz davor unser Geschenk fuer ihn an Stanny zu uebergeben mit der Bitte um Weiterleitung an Don, als plötzlich eine Tuer aufging und Don kam heraus auf den Flur. Er sah uns und kam auch zu uns. So konnten wir ihm unsere persönlichen Glueckwuensche aussprechen und ihm unser Present uebergeben. Wir haben ein Booklet extra fuer ihn angefertigt mit einer Sladehistorie von 1966 - 2005 sowie Glueckwuenschen von den Fans, ausserdem ueberreichten wir ihm ein Salatbesteck aus finnischem Holz mit dem Vermerkt, dass er es evtl. als Ersatz fuer seine zerbrochenen Drumstickes verwenden kann. Mal sehen was härter ist :-))
Ilpo machte auch paar kurze Movies mit der Digi und man kann gut die Gratulationsworte hören sowie Dons Ruehrung sehen. Es war ein sehr bewegender Augenblick.
Wir verabschiedeten uns mit einer festen freudschaftlichen Umarmung und wir wuenschten Ihm eine schöne Geburtstagsparty.
Völlig aufgelöst und uebergluecklich gingen wir dann zum Zelt zurueck und tranken ein Bier, Moni tanzte noch mit einem Kerl von der Security und ein anderer schenkte uns Tickets fuer Bier :-)
An dieser Stelle hier DANKE an den netten Mann von der Security, dessen Namen wir leider nicht wissen. Es war ein toller Abend und wir hatten viel Spass.
Nach der Verabschiedung, auch von den belgischen Sladefans, gingen wir zum Auto zurueck und unterwegs gab Lidwien noch paar Erklärungen, als ein Auto stoppte und man sie nach dem Weg fragte.
Sicherlich war der Mann sehr verwundert, warum im September jemand eine Christmaskappe trägt, Lidwien hatte ihre noch auf :-)) Merry Christmas Everybody and Everytime !! :-)
Im Hotel gut angekommen liessen wir den Abend noch einmal Revue passieren und vielen ubergluecklich in den Schlaf und träumten von Slade und dem Meeting mit Don :-)
Es war ein tolles Erlebnis und wir danken an dieser Stelle den Organisatoren fuer diesen wunderbaren Abend und natuerlich auch SLADE - Thanks for the memory !!
Am Sonntag war Abreise fuer Lidwien und Adri. Wir hatten eine sehr schöne Zeit zusammen und viel Spass und wir hoffen, dass wir uns sehr bald wiedersehen werden.
Wir blieben bis Montag in Bruessel, da wir keinen Rueckflug fuer den Sonntag nach Helsinki erhalten haben. So hatten wir noch genuegend Zeit, um noch mehr Impressionen von Bruessel mit nach Hause zu nehmen.
