Andy King: A man determined to make sure there's more going on in Carlisle
There are certain signs that, yes, he could have been a drummer in a punk band. Behind the smart suit and open necked shirt, there’s something about the square shoulders and collar size.
You can tell that Andy King still spends some time in the gym, even if he has given up the sticks.
The Crack were an Oi! band – a sort of punk-pop-skinhead crossover.
He was the 16-year-old drummer when they won a national battle of the bands competition that was broadcast by BBC1.
“We were on prime time Saturday night on BBC, I tell my kids it was the X Factor of the day, but they never televised it again!” he smiles.
The judges were Pete Townshend of The Who, Suzi Quattro and Slade’s Noddy Holder.
“We got to know Noddy quite well, he really liked us and we singed to RCA Slade’s label,” he explains.
It was 1982, Andy could see a life of rock rolling out ahead on the horizon.
Oi! bands had a reputation for being right wing and attracting violent audiences of skinheads.
Andy shoos away any idea of violence at his band’s gigs.
“Naaah, we didn’t see anything.
“The music wasn’t really that way, we used to dress in Fred Perry shirts and had short hair, that was all, we were called Suedeheads and also bracketed as mods.
“We crossed the genres, I can say that now,” he smiles.
It seems a world away from the meetings, spreadsheets and financial matters that he has to deal with as managing director of Carlisle Leisure Limited.
This is the body that runs The Sands Centre in Carlisle, the Wave in Maryport and the Workington Leisure Centre among other leisure and entertainment venues in Carlisle and Allerdale.
The Crack were lined up as tour support for Andy’s heroes, punk veterans Stiff Little Fingers, but their manager thought the new band had a rough reputation and didn’t offer the contract.

After starting as manager of Horsham leisure centre, he was promoted to run all three centres in the area.
He beat 600 other applicants to become the general manager of the first-ever Virgin Health Club in Preston, then became operations director for 120 leisure centres for major public sector contractors Serco.
He took over at CLL exactly two years ago at a time when multi-million pound redevelopments of The Sands Centre and the Moorclose leisure centre in Workington were on the drawing board."

"Liverpoolilla on The Beatles, Wolverhamptonin suuri ylpeys on Slade. Bändin uran kiihkeimmät vuodet olivat 70-luvun alkupuolella, jolloin sen remuisa rokettiroll möi käsittämättömiä määriä vinyyliä ja C-kasetteja. Ainakin nämä Slade-hitit kuuluvat jo rock&rollin suppeaan ooppimäärään: "Coz I Luv You", "Mama Weer All Crazee Now", "Gudbuy T'Jane", "Cum on Feel the Noize", "Merry Xmas Everybody" ja "Run Runaway". Mauton glam-pukeutuminen oli yhtyeen tavaramerkki huippusuosion aikaan, ja toinen massasta erottava tekijä oli Noddy Holderin ainutlaatuisen risainen ääni. Holder ei ole Slade-kuvioissa ollut mukana vuoden 1991jälkeen, mutta on sentään heltynyt antamaan Dave Hillille ja Don Powellille luvan käyttää yhtyeen nimeä. Onko Slade vain "omia biisejään soittava cover-yhtye" vai energinen paketti klassista brittiläistä työväenrockia, sepä selviää Äänekoskella keskiviikkona 25.7.

"Tämän kesän konkariosastoon kuuluvat Slade ja Suzi Quatro, jotka olivat huipulla glamrockin kulta-aikaan 70-luvulla. Vaatteissa oli silloin kimallusta ja kengissä valtavat korot.
Joku voisi sanoa, että onpa ideat vähissä, kun kaikenlaisia menneen ajan rokkareita haalitaan kehiin. Mutta ei asia ole ihan niinkään. Hyvä rockmusiikki on ikuista ja soittotaito veteraaneilla verissä.
Sladen lukuisien hittien tahdissa on helppo hoilata ja verestää muistoja. Teltta täyttyy taatusti kansasta, joka haluaa kuulla Cum On Feel The Noizen.
Hiukan kateeksi käy keskisuomalaisia. Kuopion kesäänkin sopisi ulkomaisilla rockkonkareilla tai bluesmuusikoilla tähditetty festari. Tuttujen kotimaisten esiintyjien varaan rakennettu juhla ei kaikkia tyydytä. Siinäpä haastetta."

"In his book Outliers, Malcolm Gladwell outlines the 10,000-hour rule – that the key to success in any field is down to 10,000 hours of practice.
The figure comes from the amount of time The Beatles played together before they gained popularity – playing up to eight-hour days in Hamburg more than 1,200 times between 1960 and 1964.
Slade frontman Noddy Holder, the special guest for this month’s instalment of The Space, put even more in before he got his big break.
“I probably spent about nine or ten years playing in bands before I started seeing any record sales,” says the man whose seasonal scream has become synonymous with Christmas for almost 40 years.
“We had been together as Slade for five years and Don [Powell], Dave [Hill] and I had been in other bands for four or five years before that.

- When success did come, it was huge – heralded by the number one single Coz I Luv You, the first of six chart-toppers and ten further top ten singles between 1971 and 1984, and the song which characterised the classic Slade sound.
“When we were first together, we played lots of soul, Motown and R’n’B,” says Holder.
“As soon as we started to write for ourselves, we developed a very different style and
sound. When our first hit went to number one, we knew how to do it. We found our own sound so when we were on the radio you could tell it was Slade right away.”

And they created one of the all-time great rock movies Slade In Flame, with its 20-minute Brighton denouement.
“The movie was our manager [Chas Chandler]’s idea,” says Holder. “His blueprint was always The Beatles – if it was good enough for The Beatles, it was good enough for us. Our records were charting all over the world, so the next stage would be to make a movie.”

Not long after, the band spent several years touring the US – coming back to discover punk had taken over.
The band refused to fade away though, stealing the show at the 1980 Reading Rock Festival as last minute replacements for Ozzy Osbourne, and scoring more chart success with later hits My Oh My, Run Run Away and Radio Wall Of Sound.
After 25 years with the band, Holder felt he’d had enough.
“I had been on the road for nearly 30 years,” he says. “I was having to turn down a lot of stuff outside the band because we were going on tour. I knew there had to be some point where I tried to do other things. I didn’t want to spend the rest of my life doing album-tour, album-tour every year.”
One of the offers he turned down was to front AC/DC following the death of Bon Scott – not that he regrets it.
“My commitment was to Slade,” he says. “At that time we had been through thick and thin over many years and I wasn’t about to leave them in the lurch at the end of the 1970s to join another band. I never thought for a minute of leaving them.”
When Holder did bid the lads goodbye – with guitarist Hill and drummer Powell carrying on as Slade II – he turned a planned cameo in the pilot of hit ITV period comedy The Grimleys into a central role for four years.
He also penned an autobiography Who’s Crazee Now? – which he hopes to follow up soon – hosted his own radio show for Manchester radio stations Piccadilly 1152 and Key 103 and his own surreal quiz Noddy’s Electric Ladyland, voiced Banger on Bob The Builder and found time to pick up an MBE in 2000.
“I’m always looking for something that I’ve never done before,” he says. “I still get a lot of acting roles offered to me, but generally they are ageing rock stars who commit suicide in their swimming pools – it’s not stuff that interests me. I look for stuff I will have a good time doing and that won’t take me away from home for more than a couple of weeks.”
He’s not tempted to reunite with his old band-mates either.
“I said when I split from it that I wouldn’t go backwards,” he says. “You can’t just walk in and recreate what we had. It would take a lot of hard work and rehearsal to do a few dates, and there’s a danger that what started as a month of gigs would turn into a three-year tour.
“It always has to be a full-stop.”

Continuing their pattern of one industry behind-the-scenes big wig paired with a front-of-house big name, last night opened with the sanitised but still delightful anecdotes of Muppets producer Martin Baker to open proceedings. Filling up the second half of the evening was the larger than life Slade frontman Noddy Holder, a massive draw with the crowd and with no such qualms about cleaning up his stories, yet still delivering everything with that upbeat mode his flamboyant rock band were so known for. An incredible evening for many (including one man who confided he’d been after Holder’s autograph for 40 years), long may The Space continue."
SLADE, nostalgiaa, hauskanpitoa ja ajattomia rockhittejä!
Väylän pyörre:
Twin City-festivaaleilla Sladen kanssa samana iltana esiintyy myös suomalaisen rockin vientiylpeys Michael Monroe, joten luvassa ovat kunnon rokkibileet. Monroelle Slade oli yksi nuoruuden suosikkibändeistä. Kuriositeettina mainittakoon, että hänen ensimmäinen livekokemus oli juuri Sladen keikka Helsingissä vuonna 1972.
Amerikassa taas Kissin Gene Simmons ja Cheap Trickin Tom Petersson ovat myöntäneet yhtyeidensä saaneen innoitetta niin Sladen lauluista kuin lavashowstakin. Quiet Riot-bändi sai jopa jättihitin coveroimalla yhtyeen Cum on feel the noize-kappaleen.
Ja varmasti muistatte myös Abban Waterloon euroviisuista. Siinä sukulaisuus Sladeen löytyi yhtyeen pukeutumisesta, ei musiikista.
Rockin kameleontit
Slade sai alkunsa vuonna 1966 Wolverhamptonissa. Sen perustivat, vieläkin yhtyeessä vaikuttavat, kitaristi Dave Hill ja rumpali Don Powell, jotka ovat soittaneet yhdessä vuodesta 1963 lähtien!!! Klassisessa kokoonpanossaan Slade toimi vuoteen 1992, jolloin laulaja Noddy Holder ja basisti-viulisti Jimmy Lea jättivät yhtyeen väsyttyään kiertue-elämään.

Vaikka ulkoinen habitus muuttui, Sladen musiikillisen selkärangan muodostivat Holderin raspinen laulu, Hillin särökitara ja Lean viulu.
Hittisadetta
Yhtyeen ensimmäisellä albumilla oli pelkkiä lainakappaleita. Vaikka myöhemminkin, Sladen versiot esimerkiksi Janis Joplinin Move overista ja Steppenwolfin Born to be wildista olivat loistavia, vasta kun Slade alkoi tehdä omia biisejä läpimurto tapahtui.
Little Richard-cover Get down and get with it löi hiukan kipinää, mutta vasta 20 minuutissa Holderin ja Lean jammailun tuloksena syntynyt Coz I luv you nosti yhtyeen ensi kertaa listojen kärkeen marraskuuussa 1971.
Sen jälkeen yhtye tuli ryminällä kuin Tornionjoen jäittenlähtö pahimmillaan. Syntyi biisejä, jotka
muistetaan: Look wot you dun, Take me back `ome, Mama weer all crazee now, Gudbuy T`Jane, Cum on feel the noize, Skweeze me pleeze me, My frend Stan ja Merry Xmas everybody, joka oli Sladen viimeisin ykköshitti vuonna 1973.

Kappaleet nousivat ympäri Euroopan listoille. Sitten Beatlesien päivien ei oltu koettu moista hittivyöryä.
Pelkästään Brittein saarilla Slade saavutti kuusi kertaa ykköstilan ollen kaikkiaan 17 kertaa Top 20:ssä.
Toinen tuleminen
Kun Eurooppa oli vallattu, oli Amerikan vuoro, mutta se ei onnistunut. Ajat olivat muuttumassa ja vuosikymmenen lopussa tulivat uudet villitykset, punk etunenässä. Sladen aika alkoi olla ohi. Sopimus Polydor-yhtiön kanssa raukesi vuonna 1977 ja levyjä julkaistiin sen jälkeen Chas Chandlerin pikkumerkin kautta.
Slade oli lyömässä pillit pussiin. Muun muassa Hill oli jo vuokraillut Rolls Royceaan
hää-ja syntymäpäiväkuljetuksiin, jotta pystyi maksamaan laskunsa, kunnes vuonna 1980 tuli pikakomennus, Ozzy Osbournen peruttua keikkansa, massiivisille Readingin festivaaleille.
Vastaanotto oli uskomaton, yleisö lauloi täysin rinnoin mukana, jopa Merry Xmas everybodya keskellä parhainta hellekautta ja musiikkilehdistö kehui yhtyeen maasta taivaisiin.
Sladen vanhat levyt soivat taas radioissa ja listoille yhtye nousi myös uusilla lauluilla kuten Run runaway ja My oh my, joista jälkimmäinen nousi muun muassa Ruotsin ja Norjan listaykköseksi, mutta mitään 1970-luvun hitti-ilotulitusta ei koettu.
Matkalla pohjoiseen
Slade oli hyvässä iskussa kesällä 1982, kun se saapui, toistaiseksi pohjoisimmalle keikalleen Oulun Kuusrockiin. Parasta olivat tietenkin tutut ”taputa ja tömistä”-biisit, jotka saivat tarttuvilla kertosäkeillään yleisön helposti laulamaan ja mukaan ilonpitoon, erikoisnumeronaan wc-paperirullien heittely lavalta yleisön joukkoon ja päinvastoin.
Yhtye oli myös Readingin innoittamana, saanut heavymmän otteen ja paikoitellen ukkosenjylinän säestämä Holderin laulu ja Hillin kitarointi toivat mieleen Black Sabbathin.
Ensi heinäkuussa, (kolmea päivää vaille) 30 vuotta myöhemmin Slade konsertoi Torniossa.

Vaikkei Slade ole ollut aktiivinen levyttäjä enää vuosiin, sen vanhat hitit purevat yhä livenä. Vähintään kerran vuodessa Slade nousee myös listoille jossain päin Eurooppaa, syynä jouluklassikko Merry Xmas everybody."

"Kyllä rassaa välillä kiekkomatseissa, kun hallien dj:t soittavat tätä biisiä. Ei se, että soittavat, vaan se, että soittavat väärää versiota. Halleissa kun soi Quiet Riotin näkemys aiheesta vuodelta 1983. Kymmenen vuotta jälkeen alkuperäisen Sladen version. Riskinähän tässäkin on se, että ihmiset luulevat tämän olevan se ainoa, aito ja alkuperäinen versio ko. kappaleesta.

Mutta takaisin Cum On Feel The Noizeen: Ihan ok:han se tuo Quiet Riotinkin versiokin on, mutta vain ihan ok. Biisistä puuttuu se valta, voima ja vaarantunne mikä alkuperäisestä löytyy. Tuomion voi tehdä jo ensimmäisen parin sekunnin perusteella. Alkuperäinen alkaa Noddy Holderin huudolla: BEIBE, BEIBE, BEIBEE!!! JEAH!!! Ja sitten vyöryy kaikki päälle. So you think I have an evil mind, well I tell You honey.... Varmaan Quiet Riotkin haki yhtä iskevää aloitusta, mutta Kevin DuBrow ei siihen ehkä pystynyt, niinpä QR:n versio päätettiin alkaa suoraan kertosäkeestä. Vain laulu ja rumpukomppi. Oasiskin on muuten versioinut Cum On Feel The Noizen, mutta ei siitä sen enempää. Kunhan läpisoittivat helvetillisellä volyymilla. Aika p.....

Huumoriakin on mukana kosolti. Yleensäkin Sladen biiseissä huumori on aina jollain tapaa mukana. Oikeastaan se näkyy jo kundien ulkonäöstäkin. Joskus olen miettinyt sitäkin, että kuinka itsetietoista tuo Sladen ulkoinen "pelleimago" onkaan ollut. Täysin vakavissaan kundit eivät varmasti olleet ulkoisen habituksensa suhteen. Tavallaan Slade oli 70-luvun alkupuolella väärin ymmärretty bändi.

Livetilanteissa äänekäs räime lietsoi joukot joskus hyvinkin riehakkaaseen tunnelmaan. ...
Sladesta yritettiin tehdä glam-rock bändiä. Sitäkään se ei ollut, vaikka vielä nykyäänkin glam-rockista puhuttaessa Slade on ensimmäisiä esiin nousevia nimiä. Slade nyt vaan sattui olemaan glam-rockin valtakautena suosituimpia orkestereita ja keikkuipa vielä listojen kärkipäässä usean singlen voimin. Bändi kyllä pukeutui raflaavasti kimalteisiin ja korkokenkiin, mutta kyseessä oli ehkä ennemminkin pienestä piruilusta teinipoppareille. Slade oli rehti rokkibändi rehdeille rokkihemmoille, eikä mitään lässypoppia varhaisteineille.

Kakarat kuitenkin tykkäsivät ja levyt kävivät kaupaksi. Vuosina 1971 - 73 Sladella oli kuusi listaykköstä Englannissa ja lukematon määrä muita hittejä. Meininki oli sen mukaista ja tuntui, että kaikki oli mahdollista. Sitten tapahtui jotain ihmeellistä - bändi katosi. Slade jatkoi kyllä edelleen olemassaoloaan, mutta alamäki oli lähes pystysuora. Biisit eivät enää soineet radiossa, levyt eivät enää käyneet kaupaksi ja sitä myötä levyjä ostavalta yleisöltä unohtui koko bändi. Esiintymislavat pienenivät ja siinä ohessa tietysti myös yleisömäärät. Kaverit olivat itsekin ihmeissään ja nimesivät pari levyäkin itseironisesti tilannetta kuvaten: Whatever Happened To Slade? ja Return To Base.
Muutaman kellarivuoden jälkeen bändille tarjottiin yllättäen uutta mahdollisuutta. Siitä suuri kiitos kuuluu Ozzy Osbournelle, joka peruutti viime hetkillä Readingin festarikeikkansa vuonna 1980. Järjestäjille tuli hätä korvata yksi festareiden odotetuimmista esiintyjistä. Joku kekkasi Sladen. Hieman epäröiden bändi buukattiin, mutta kuinka ollakaan, Slade vei koko potin. Arvostelut olivat ylistäviä ja sitä kautta uusi polvi löysi bändin. Vuonna 1982 Readingin ihme uusiutui Suomessa ja Oulun Kuusrockissa. Tuolloinkin Sladen buukkamiseen oli syynä toisen bändin peruuttaminen. Tällä kertaa peruutti Michael Schenker Group. Taas odotukset olivat epäileviä: Eikös tämä bändi ole jo pois muodista. Vaan ei ollut. Kuten Readingissäkin, Slade pesi taas koko porukan. Seurasi muutama levy astetta raskaampaa rokkia ja jopa pari hittiä: My Oh My (-83), joka nousi brittilistalla peräti kakkoseksi ja Run Runaway (-84), joka nousi seitsemänneksi. Viimeksi mainittua sentään kuuleekin aina välillä jossain. Biisi kuuluu siihen luokkaan, jonka kaikki tietävät, mutta jonka esittäjää kukaan ei tiedä. Pikkuhiljaa kuitenkin alkoi aika taas ajaa Sladen ohi. Bändi jatkoi, mutta vuosien myötä Noddy Holder (Laulu & gtr) ja Jimmy Lea (b) jättäytyivät pois bändistä. Dave Hill (gtr)ja Don Powell (dr) jatkoivat korvaavilla miehistöillä.
Slade on olemassa edelleen, mutta suuren kuuluisuuden aika on auttamattomasti takana. Suomessakin ovat silloin tällöin poikenneet, mutta kaikessa hiljaisuudessa. Näitä keikkoja ei ole isommin mainostettu lehdissä ja mediassa. Toivottavasti joku on aina kuitenkin paikalle tiensä löytänyt. Ehkä lavaenergia ei ole enää sitä luokkaa, kuin se joskus oli, mutta se ei välttämättä kuulu soitossa. Sitäpaitsi sellaisesta määrästä hittejä, joka Sladen aarrearkusta löytyy, olisi lähes jokainen maapallon bändeistä kateellinen. "
