Än så länge är ett band bokat, men de kommer att vara helgens dragplåster. Brittiska Slade bilades 1966 och räknades under 1970-talet som en av de största banden i sin genre. De har sedan starten släppt 21 album.
- Att ha ett nostalgiband kändes väldigt viktigt. Men vi är fortfarande i planeringsstadiet och hoppas på fler spännande band, säger Mattias Forsgren."

1964 haben Sie die erste Band gegründet, seit 1969 sind Sie mit Slade auf Tour. Gibt es keine Ermüdungserscheinungen?
Don Powell: Ich liebe es so und möchte es nicht vermissen. Ich habe nach wie vor den tollsten Job der Welt.
Es gab bei Slade immer wieder Trennungen und Wiedervereinigungen. Mit welchen Musikern ist die Band derzeit auf Tour?
Don Powell: Mit zwei großartigen Kerlen, nämlich John Berry am Bass und als Sänger und Gitarrist Mal McNulty. Sowie Gründungsmitglied Dave Hill und meiner Wenigkeit.
Sie sind Jahrgang 1946. Hat man da nicht Lust, nur noch den eigenen Garten zu bestellen und dickleibige Romane zu lesen?
Don Powell: Das kann ich doch an meinen freien Tagen machen. Für mich gibt es nichts Schöneres als dieses Gefühl am Schlagzeug, wenn du mit Freunden spielst, die du liebst und respektierst.
Sie waren die erfolgreichste britische Band der 70er Jahre. Heute gibt es neue große Namen in der Branche. Tut das weh?
Don Powell: Nein, jeder findet seinen Platz in diesem Musikgeschäft und ich lerne immer noch von „neuen“ oder „alten“ Leuten in diesem Metier.
Gibt es eine Band, die Sie richtig bewundern?
Don Powell: Da gibt es viele. Zum Beispiel die „Eagles“, die ihr Comeback nach 14 Jahren Pause hatten.
Sie gelten als Glamrockband. Was muss man sich heute darunter vorstellen?
Don Powell: Das war einfach der letzte Schrei in den 70ern. Aber wir sind zwischenzeitlich erwachsener geworden, zumindest ein wenig.

Was der Verrückteste?
Don Powell: 1973 im australischen Sydney beim Open Air Festival „Ranwick Race Course“. Die Leute hatten seit 30 Jahren keinen Regen gehabt und an dem Abend, als Slade spielte, war da ein irrsinniges Gewitter. Es war verrückt. 30000 Menschen tanzten wie wilde Indianer. Eine große Zeitung titelte dann: Slade brachte den Regen nach Australien.
Anfang Mai spielen Sie mit Sweet und dem Electric Light Orchestra in der Kongresshalle. Haben Sie sich zuvor auch schon getroffen?
Don Powell: Sehr oft. Sweet sind langjährige Freunde und wir sind schon oft zusammen auf Tour gewesen. Wir lieben uns. Mit dem Electric Light Orchestra sind wir durch Amerika getourt.

17 Top Twenty hits, six of which number ones, that is the balance of Slade. Founded in 1964 in Wolverhampton, they were the most successful British band in the 70ies. They were on stage with Black Sabbath, ZZ Top and Aerosmith. Songs like "Far Far Away" and "Everyday" made them immortal, they received the honorary doctorate from a University. Nevertheless, there has been separations and many downhills. Currently the quartet is on tour and come back on Sunday 6th May, the Classic Rock Night with Sweet and the Electric Light Orchestra in the Congress at the park.
The first group was founded in 1964, since 1969 they have been touring as Slade. Aren`t there any signs of exhaustion?
Don Powell: I love it so and I don`t want to miss it. I have still the greatest job in the world.
There has always been separations and reunions with Slade. Who are the musicians, who are toruing in the the band?
Don Powell: Two great guys, namely John Berry on the bass and vocals and guitarist Mal McNulty. And founding member Dave Hill and myself.
You were born in 1946. Would you just like to order a garden of your own and read thick novels?
Don Powell: That I can do on my free days. For me there is nothing quite like the feeling on the drums when you play with friends, whom you love and respect.
You were the most successful British band of the 70s. Today there are new big names in the industry. Does it hurt?
Don Powell: No, everyone finds his place in the music business and I'm still learning from "new" or "old" people in this profession.
Is there a band you really admire?
Don Powell: There are many. For example, the "Eagles", they had a comeback after 14 years break.
You are considered Glamrockband. What ar your thoughts of it now?
Don Powell: That was just the latest craze in the 70s. But in the meantime we have grown up, at least a little.
How many records Slade has sold?
Don Powell: Not an idea, probably a few millions.
What has been during all these years the most impressive performance ?
Don Powell: In the 70 years the "Great Western Festival" in England. People thought we were as one "pop" band, but we turned right and stole the whole show from the others.
What was the craziest one?
Don Powell: 1973 in Sydney, Australia at the Open Air Festival "Ranwick Race Course". The people hadn't seen rain for 30 years and when Slade played in the evening, there was a furious thunderstorm. It was crazy. 30,000 people were dancing like wild Indians. A large newspaper headlined it: Slade brought the rain to Australia.
In the beginning of May, you will play with Sweet and the Electric Light Orchestra in the Congress Hall at Augsburg. Have you already earlier been together in this way?
Don Powell: Very often. Sweet are our longtime friends and we've often been on tour together. We love each others. With the Electric Light Orchestra, we have been touring across America.

Don Powell: Dave Hill, John Berry and Mal McNulty live in England, I live with my family in Denmark."

BE IT orchestral rock, New Romantic, ska, reggae or pop, Wonder Stuff frontman Miles Hunt is on a mission to get the rest of the world to take Midlands music more seriously.
The chart-topping singer reckons the region’s output is treated frivolously by the music-buying public and wants to change perceptions.
He is touring record stores today performing some of the region’s classics, as his band prepares to release seven-inch vinyl cover versions of local gems under the title From The Midlands With Love.
First up will be a rendition of The Move’s 1968 No.1 Blackberry Way, backed with Save It For Later by ska legends The Beat.
Songs lined up for future releases include Duran Duran’s Hungry Like The Wolf, TheEarth Dies Screaming by UB40, Slade’s Far Far Away and There There My Dear by Dexys Midnight Runners, plus possible Moody Blues and Steel Pulsecovers.
“There was a direct connection – I felt more for things like Wizzard and Slade, whereas things like The Beatles didn’t really connect for me.
“But from The Move, through punk, new wave and the ska thing, although I’m biased, for me it always seemed the most important songs in any of those movements were from the Midlands.”
Miles Hunt's uncle Bill Hunt has co-written with Dave Hill some songs for Slade II. Bill Hunt played also keyboards in Roy Wood's Wizzard.

Slade oli Britannian pop-musiikille 1970-luvun alkuvuosina samaa kuin Oasis 1990-luvulla: äänekäs ylpeyden aihe. Pahimmillaan tyylitajutonta drag-Abbaa muistuttaneen kvartetin musiikilliset ansiot vain tuppasivat jättisuosiossa jäämään töminän ja glitterin jalkoihin. The Slade Box tarjoaa uuden näkökulman nelikkoon, joka on tehnyt hienoja levytyksiä silloinkin, kun median ja ostavan yleisön huomio ei ole siihen keskittynyt.
Kuten Asko Alanen viime numerossa totesi, vuoden 1972 Slayed? on bändin ehein albumikokonaisuus, täyteraitoja muilta levyiltä löytyy pitkin matkaa. Niinpä boksi on Sladelle oiva julkaisuformaatti, jolle on voitu valikoida runsaasti täkyjä matkan varrelta.
Tuotteliaana bändinä Slade on tehnyt monia hienoja b-puolia, joita on mukana runsaasti. Yhtyeen hapuileva alkuvaihe saa juuri sopivan huomion. Rock And Roll Preacherillä Sladella meni halle-lujaa jo 25 vuotta ennen Lordia eikä monikaan mahtiballadi saisi palaa nousemaan kurkkuun sytkärein valaistulla areenalla yhtä hyvin kuin My Oh My. Edes myöhemmin mukaan tulleet syntikat, jotka runtelivat monet kelpo rockit torsoiksi, eivät saaneet Slade-kappaleilta nirriä pois. Tähän asti luulin, että Sladelta riittää jokin hittikokoelma. En luule enää. "
