Looking back on 70 years of school life
Express & Star 31.03.2010:
"From the days when boys took woodwork while girls did needlework right to the present day – a South Staffordshire high school has created an exhibition celebrating its 70-year history. Pupils and staff at Codsall High School have worked for around a year to compile memories, photographs and memorabilia of the Elliots Lane school.
...
The school opened on June 3, 1940, and some original fixtures such as the old school bell, girls’ aprons and a school report were all on display over the weekend.
...
Gill Whittaker, nee Thacker, was among the former pupils who enjoyed the exhibition. The mother-of-one, who attended Codsall High from 1960 to 1965, spotted herself in a school photo in which she was pictured standing next to Slade rocker Jimmy Lea.
“It’s certainly brought back some memories,” said the retired dental nurse tutor.“I used to have a copy of the class photo but it’s gone, so I’m really pleased to see this again.”

Don Powell in Lorna Doone on Suomi-TV
Don Powell can be seen on the Finnish TV in March/April 2010, when three part "Lorna Doone" movie is shown on the Suomi-TV channel (Suomi = Finland) on Saturdays at 22:00. Don plays a character called "Dapple Rose" - Dapple Rose was a track on the "Play It Loud" album released in 1970. Don was also a co-writer (with Jim Lea and Noddy Holder) of the beautiful "Dapple Rose".
The last episode of "Lorna Doone", the finnish title "Hirmuvaltainen heimo", comes out on Saturday 3rd April 2010.
SUOMI TV

"Slade's Don is acting up."
"RUGGED rocker Don Powell has turned TV bad-boy for a big-budget costume drama.
The 54-year-old Slade star has been picked to appear in Lorna Doone Lorna Doone, A Romance of Exmoor, is a novel by Richard Doddridge Blackmore. It was first published anonymously in 1869, in a limited three-volume edition of just 500 copies, of which only 300 sold.
Producers were looking for a rough and rugged villain as an extra in the programme, which stars Men Behaving Badly's Martin Clunes.
They took one look at drummer Don and found their perfect star.
Don - who helped pen a string of hits like Merry Christmas Everybody - said: "The casting people said they needed a bit of rough for the villains. They took one look at me and said 'You'll do'."
Don plays a member of the evil gang - The Doones - who race around the country causing havoc and terrorising innocent villagers.
He went unrecognised as he joined hundreds of other extras filming in Crickhowell, mid Wales.
He added: "It was great fun. I've never done anything like this."

Pupils told to Cum on Feel The Noize
25.03.2010 Telford Journal

Legendary rock star Dave Hill from Slade arrived at a Telford school earlier this week to jam with youngsters.
The well-known musician put on his teacher’s hat to lead a music session for pupils from Haughton School in Shifnal on Monday.
Ann Morris, class teacher, said: “He came into class earlier this week to play his instruments and led a music session for the children. As you can imagine everyone had a great time really appreciating the musical skill, tempos and volume. The children joined in with instruments and dancing along to the music.”

Classic Rock Night:

Noddy Holder in UK National Music Competition
Rocklinks 19.3.2010:
"Most people know Noddy Holder for his infamous phrase ‘It’s Christmaaas!’ As the lead singer of Slade, the legendary group behind the huge classic Merry Xmas Everybody, Noddy Holder still continues to dominate the festive chart today.
With extensive experience in touring, performing and topping the charts, Noddy will be bringing his wealth of experience to the judging panel at the Live and Unsigned Festival this year.
...
It was in 1969 when Noddy and the band shot to stardom, as they met up with ex-Animals bass player Chas Chandler, who also produced and managed Jimi Hendrix. Changing their name to Slade, the band were catapulted to success during the glam rock era of the 70’s and 80’s.
Noddy’s vocals fronted over 40 hit singles, including six number ones. They released over 20 albums during their career, four reaching the number one spot in the UK and to this date, Slade are the biggest selling UK singles group of the seventies.
...
Although Noddy left the band in 1991, their legacy still lives on as artists today continue to cover their classic tracks including Oasis, James Blunt and Girls Aloud.
...
Nowadays, Noddy is always popping up on television and radio and recently presented an award at the 2010 Brit Awards. He has his own radio show in Los Angeles and New York and regularly contributes to BBC Radio 2.

Fynbo bag rockstjernes selvbiografi

Don Powell prepares to publish his autobiography
16.3.2010 Steve Bradley, Birmingham Mail:
The drummer of Midland rock legends Slade is putting the finishing touches to his autobiography – 37 years after a serious car crash permanently damaged his memory. Don Powell, now 63, has been working on his memoirs with Danish journalist Lise Lyng Falkenberg.
On July 4, 1973, the chart-topping musician was badly hurt when his Bentley car careered into a brick wall and tree in Wolverhampton. His 20-year-old fiancee Angela Morris died in the accident, but still no-one knows who was driving as Don lost his short-term memory as a result and both were flung from the vehicle.
...
Speaking before the opening of The Slade Rooms music venue in Wolverhampton, which was named in the band’s honour, Don said: “The book is pretty much finished and we’re just looking for a publisher.”
Don, who lives in Denmark with his partner Hanne and children Anna Kirstine, 23, Amelie, 21, and Andreas, 14, said the band, which had six number one hits in the 70s, had been very grateful for their success.
...
He said the band, in which he still features along with founder guitarist Dave Hill, had dates booked in Germany, Finland and Russia and was set to record a new album. The classic line-up, with songwriters Noddy Holder and Jim Lea, split up in 1991 but Don said there were no hard feelings: “The four of us met up at Jim’s house a few weeks ago, talked about the old days and took the mickey out of each other”

Slade Rooms opening with Dave Hill and Don Powell 11.3.2010
Express & Star newspaper Friday 12th March 2010:
"Here it is everybody as Slade Rooms open
Wolverhampton’s new Little Civic was officially launched last night – with a little help from some famous friends.
Live music venue The Slade Rooms was formally opened by two of the men who inspired its name. Black Country music legends Dave Hill and Don Powell, from Wolverhampton-based glam rockers Slade, were on hand to cut the ribbon.
...
Dave and Don, who founded Slade, said it was “an amazing honour” to have the venue named after them. Bilston-born Don, aged 63, said: “We’re very proud of what’s been done here today. “It’s been a fantastic day, this is a fantastic venue – I would say please enjoy it.”
Dave, who still lives in Lower Penn, Wolverhampton, added: “It’s an amazing honour to have a venue named after us. I love this city and its people.”
...
Earlier in the day, Don and Dave were at the Civic Hall to witness their names being added to a Black Country wall of honour, joining Slade frontman Noddy Holder, Ned’s Atomic Dustbin singer Jonn Penney and composer Edward Elgar."

Slade boys go crazee for new music venue
Birmingham Mail 12.3.2010:
"Two members of Midland rock legends Slade officially unveiled a music venue named in their honour. Guitarist Dave Hill and drummer Don Powell, both aged 63, opened The Slade Rooms in Broad Street, Wolverhampton.
The venue, a replacement for the Little Civic in the city’s North Street, is larger than its predecessor and has already hosted up-and-coming bands. Manager Mark Blackstock said he hoped it would emulate the old venue, which hosted Kasabian, Coldplay and Arctic Monkeys early in their careers.
Dave, who lives in Lower Penn on the edge of the city, said: “I have a great love for Wolverhampton and its people. Our music comes from the environment and the place we live. “Having a great venue like this will only enhance the city.”
Bilston-born Don, who lives in Denmark with his wife and three children, said: “Having a venue named after us is fantastic – I feel very honoured. It seems almost unreal.”

Don Powell interview, Heidenheimer Zeitung 4.3.2010

Rhein Zeitung 8.3.2010:
"Koblenz Licht aus ... Spot an! Die "Classic Rock Night" lockte Fans massenweise nach Koblenz.

Foto: Thomas Frey

fourth were sailor, they made the classic rock night once more gently with nice show. it was sweet as the last of the series, this time without the founding member andy scott, because he was ill. a young man entered, with long hair were accustomed to the bottom and much more action than we put out by this. the sound of his guitar was rocking, his name I unfortunately do not know.
the audience, well I guess no more than 1000, but judge from the first row, where I am always bad. this was now my 37th slade-gig. My endeavor is so, until next year, where slade is celebrating next year 45 years stage anniversary, that I could also counting my 45th experience slade-gig, so I have still much before. here is a small selection of pictures, slade in suhl. I do not think that will be published many pictures, since there were no photographers, I havn`t seen."

SLADE
Providence 1975 [Dan Lampinski Recording, 1CD]
Live at the Providence Civic Center, Providence, RI, October 25, 1975. Very good audience recording.
Dave Jewell played this album last night on his radio-show.

Hard to imagine that Slade were touted, at one time, as the next Beatles. After all, they were the first act to have three singles enter at No. 1 on the British charts. They were Britain’s top band of 1972-74 and were regulars on Top Of The Pops. But casual listeners will probably remember them as glam rockers whose song titles were often misspelt.
By 1975, even if they were not the hit-making machine they once were, on stage, they were still energy-charged rockers and could easily hold and whip up the crowd, as the Providence concert showed.
As ethiessen1, who created the artwork, said: “I hadn’t listened to this band since back in junior high school, and then the attraction was primarily their outlandish stage attire combined with their instinct for good, well constructed anthemic rock n roll with just a hint of pop. If you’ve not heard this band before… ignore the glam looking costumes and prepare to be blown away by relatively simple but well arranged and well performed rockers. Think of a British (where these guys were major stars) version of Kiss but with a little more flair and a lot less makeup…”
Thanks to djscomics for sharing the lossless tracks on the Dime site. Above all, thanks to Dan Lampinski, Carl Morstadt (who mastered the tracks), Kev, ethiessen1 and the rest of the Lampinski crew.

WDR 2 MUSIKCLUB - IN CONCERT (SONNTAG, 07.03.10)
Dezember 1969. Im Frühjahr zuvor hatte die Band mit "On the Threshold of a Dream" ihr erstes "Nummer-1-Album" in den Charts.

Slade set to headline at arts festival
Two former members of iconic 70s rock band Slade are to headline at Shifnal’s first ever Arts and Music Festival this autumn.
Dave Hill and Don Powell, who continue to perform under the name Slade, have been confirmed at the festival which takes place from September 18 to the 25.
Festival committee chairman Tony Stringfellow, told the Journal that he knows flamboyant guitarist Dave Hill which helped when booking the band.
Mr Stringfellow said he thought it was highly likely that the group, which now consists of Dave, Don, John Berry and Mal McNulty, would perform Slade’s monster hit Merry Xmas Everybody.
He said: “We have confirmed Slade for the Saturday night – they are booked.

Mr Stringfellow said: “We are looking for more sponsorship. The festival will cost around £20,000 to put the festival on in reality. We will be getting ticket sales but whatever we make will go for next year.”

Slade duo Dave Hill and Don Powell confirm they will open the Slade Rooms at the new Little Civic in Wolverhampton
Feb 24 2010 by Steve Bradley, Birmingham Mail
BLACK Country rock heroes Don Powell and Dave Hill are to officially open a new venue named after their world famous band Slade.
And organisers say the group’s gregarious lead singer Noddy Holder is hoping to attend the launch of the Slade Rooms in Broad Street, Wolverhampton, on March 11. The venue is part of the new Little Civic.
But Civic Halls spokesman Jonn Penney has ruled out a full reunion of the original band at the event, as bassist and songwriter Jim Lea said he would be on holiday at the time.
Jonn said: “We are still waiting to hear back from Noddy Holder, but Dave and Don are definitely coming.

The tall tale of how teacher Taffy Thomas turned storytelling laureate
News | Published in The TES on 5 February, 2010 | By: Helen Ward
"..Two years travelling the country for yarn spinner who found his calling through post-stroke speech therapy
"when I left teaching," said Taffy Thomas, who was appointed this week as the UK's first storytelling laureate, "my headteacher told me, 'You are leaving teaching to work in education.' He was right - what I do as a storyteller is educational. You can't write a story unless you can tell a story and you can't tell a story unless you've heard a story."
...
But his first love was teaching.
...
"I had a really inspirational teacher at primary school in Somerset, a man called Gordon Rose. He's immortalised now in one of my stories.
"I did my teacher training at Dudley College of Education and then got a job teaching at Etheridge School in Bilston, which the members of Slade went to. Dave Hill (lead guitarist) ruined one of my lessons once by walking past the window just as I'd just got them all settled down."

Slade guitarist Dave Hill on new Facebook campaign for Noddy Holder to rejoin the band
Jan 31 2010 by Steve Bradley, Sunday Mercury
SLADE star Dave Hill spoke about a new campaign for Noddy Holder to rejoin the group and said: ‘‘If he wants to come and sing with us, we’d be very happy.’’
The lead guitarist was responding to a growing Facebook group which is trying to persuade the charismatic frontman to get back together with his the chart-topping Black Country band.
Devoted fan Mark Taylor has attracted more than 1,000 members to his internet campaign – entitled We Want Noddy To Rejoin Slade – in just one month.
Dave, 63, initially played down the campaign by stating he believed he and the fun-loving group, minus Noddy and fellow songwriter Jim Lea, would continue with their current singer, Malcolm McNulty.

Interview with Don Powell - Slade by Steve Grantley
We had been thinking of including Slade drummer Don Powell in our Great British Drum Heroes section for some time. As Steve Grantley, drummer with Stiff Little Fingers and The Alarm, co-wrote a book titled Cum On Feel The Noize – The Story Of Slade for Carlton books a few years ago, he seemed the perfect person to interview the man himself. Steve agreed, so here we pass over to him to give us a brief overview of Don and Slade’s
enduring career.
________________________________________
Don Powell is the drummer with Slade, who are arguably the greatest glam rock band ever! Don was a working class boy playing local clubs and pubs when he first started with the band, but he went on to achieve huge chart success and all the fame, fortune and madness that goes with it. Slade became a ‘70’s phenomenon and one of Britain’s most successful pop acts of all time. Their good-time-vibe anthems and scarves-in-the-air sense of rock balladry has lasted them throughout their entire career and they’re still going strong.

"Coz Weer Crazee Fur Gud Grama" Forget all that seasonal stuff; Slade; with their unique take on the English language; were a brilliant and truly under-rated band. A blend of pop hooks and rock n' roll guitars combined with Noddy Holder's unique vocal talents. 'That' single may well have made them all rich men; but it was the years that preceded that it that cemented their place a true rock greats. So we hope you like this Slade T-shirt as much as we do.

Album: The Imagined Village, Empire & Love (ECC)
Reviewed by Andy Gill
Simon Emmerson's folk/world project becomes a much firmer, more focused aggregation than on its 2007 debut.
The programmed beats are pared back to a minimum in order to allow the rhythm section room to devise a range of more subtle, organic, grooves, with sitar the sole non-British frontline element in what is now more obviously a band sound.

It speaks volumes about the band's versatility that they adapt as easily to this as to the album's more earthbound themes, of which the most startling is undoubtedly a version of Slade's "Cum On Feel The Noize" turned into a combination folk lament and invitation to the dance: with the world-weariness of Martin Carthy's delivery spiked by his daughter's descant harmony, and wistful fiddle and sitar further emphasising the mood of poignant yearning.

Guitarist Dave Hill: 'Some Say That Christmas Isn't Christmas Without Slade'
|
Ultimate Guitar 25.12.2009:
"Around Christmas, wherever you walk in the United Kingdom, whether it be through shops, pubs, clubs, it's extremely likely you'll hear the rocking tones of Slade's "Merry Xmas Everybody". Even if you're at home, the radio and the television will at some point air the track - it's extremely difficult to miss in fact. But beneath all that lies something underrated and relatively unnoticed, and that's a group that has cut a slew of strong compositions, amounting to a weighty back catalogue. In fact, groups to have cited Slade as an influence include no lesser names than Kiss, Oasis, Cheap Trick, Quiet Riot, and James Blunt amongst many, many others.
On November 23rd, 2009, Universal Music issued the compilation "Merry Xmas Everybody - Slade Party Hits". Grouping in 1966 as a new version of the N' Betweens, vocalist Noddy Holder, guitarist Dave Hill, bassist Jim Lea and drummer Don Powell would revise their group name to Ambrose Slade, eventually shortening it to merely Slade. Throughout their career, Slade have accumulated twenty-three top twenty UK singles, a number that includes six number ones. In the early seventies, Slade were arguably the biggest group in the UK charts, notching up no less than eleven top five singles between 1971 and 1974 alone. "Merry Xmas Everybody - Slade Party Hits" includes many of the act's signature tunes, such as "Merry Xmas Everybody", "Coz I Luv You", "Mama Weer All Crazee Now", "C'mon Feel The Noize", and "Skweeze Me Pleeze Me".

On December 2nd at 12:00 GMT, Hit The Lights' Robert Gray telephoned reception at Truro, Cornwall's Royal Hotel, and asked to be put through to the room of Slade lead guitarist Dave Hill. Hill discussed "Merry Xmas Everybody", as well as Slade's early career.

Express & Star 01.01.2010:
"Noddy told to cum on feel noise of fan calls
Almost 350 people have joined a Facebook group entitled We Want Noddy Holder to Rejoin Slade. Die-hard fans are calling for Walsall-born Noddy to re-join original bandmates Jim Lea, Dave Hill and Don Powell for one last gig. Group founder Mark Taylor, of Shepherd’s Bush, London, describes Wolverhampton-based Slade as “one of the greatest live bands to ever come out of the UK”.
The campaign has only been going for four days and he predicts thousands will eventually add their name to it.
Postman Mr Taylor, aged 41, has been a Slade fan since he was five. He also writes for a music website in his spare time. “I’ve never seen them live but it would mean the world to me and many others to see them back together,” he said. Noddy has long retired from the music scene and was unavailable for comment today, while bassist Jim Lea has a solo career.
